He was on the Senate Safety Committee and pushed to release, modify, and pass the improved HB101 and is a huge cycling fan. Here is your chance to "Cycle with the Senator" and give this guy a huge THANK YOU for supporting cycling!

Fifth - take advantage of our 12 and under Youth Rate.

Also, while we are past the mail-in deadline, online registration has been extended until Wednesday May 18th with the $5 savings still in effect until midnight Sunday May 15. T-shirts are no longer guaranteed but will be distributed if available. Proceeds benefit the Carrollton Greenbelt - a bicycle/pedestrian facility that will circle Carrollton.

Boy Scout Troop 138 is geared up and ready to go, the community is excited to have you in town, and we look forward to riding with you next week.

If you'd like to make a bicycle weekend out of it, please ride with the Roopville Ramble crowd on Saturday - proceeds benefit Camp Sunshine. Roopville is only 15 minutes outside of Carrollton.

Its going to be beautiful weekend to be on a bicycle!!

www.WestGeorgia100.org
and
www.RoopvilleRamble.org

See you soon!!

Mikki

AV200 May 14th and 15th

On two days this May, you can be among a group of cyclists and volunteers who are challenging themselves and changing the world. The AV200 200 begins on the beautiful Emory University campus in Atlanta and winds through scenic Georgia countryside to arrive at Camp Rock Eagle in the Oconee National Forest. Along the way you will have the opportunity to make new friends and see parts of Georgia in ways that you have never seen it before... from a bike! And at the same time you will be raising much needed money for Emory Vaccine Center, which is at the forefront of AIDS vaccine research.

Completing back-to-back centuries (200 miles) is a very rewarding endeavor. Building public awareness for HIV/AIDS is challenging. Raising money for an AIDS Vaccine is difficult. And making the commitment to accept these challenges is a serious one.

The decision, the commitment, the training, the sweat, the pain, the accomplishment of your impossible dream, the knowledge that YOU have made a significant contribution through your individual efforts that make a big difference in the world is a sense of great exhilaration that have made grown people weep with joy at the end of the ride. What you will have accomplished will be felt around the world!

The registration fee is $100 but will be discounted $25 if a team of five or more registers. The fee includes two t-shirts, accommodations Saturday night and all meals/drinks for the weekend, including a post ride dinner/ceremony on the campus of Emory University. The fundraising minimum is a low $500. Two
categories to choose from: "Full On Aero" or "Eddy Merkx Style"!
What's this? Full On Aero is just like it sounds-bring all the aero stuff
you have! If you don't have a time trial bike, don't worry. You'll be in
the Eddy Merkx Style division. This means road bike and no clip-ons, no
aero wheels, etc....straight up.
If you can't make the race, you can "ghost ride" the event. Or, if you
don't want to race, you can just ride the course. All money raised will be
donated to the Columbiana Middle School Special Education Department. So,
don't be stingy!
Everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level, competitive desire or
discipline! Just bring a bike!
I'm looking for donations to be given out as door prizes, so please contact
me if you'd like to donate. No cash prizes to be given to the
winners...only pride and a medal to the state champions. I intend to have
multiple door prizes to give out, so regardless if you're a world TT
champion or just a novice, you have an equal chance of winning something!
I plan on the real winners being the students in the Special Education
programs. I also intend on making this an annual event, with next year's
event being a bit earlier in the season.
Any club, bike shop, organization, etc that would like to be involved is
more than welcome. Just let me know.
Please forward this to your lists so that maximum notice can be given.
Travis M. Last year was another success thanks to all the new and returning riders and sponsors---but of course we hope to make this year even better! Due to construction at the high school last year, we changed the venue for the start location, which resulted in some exciting new route changes. While we were able to keep them largely the same as in previous years, we were able to take advantage of some new freshly-paved roads along with some slight re-routes which kept the riders out of town and on the scenic backroads we all love best. As usual we will have SAG support, so if you find you've bitten off more than you can chew you can hitch a ride back to the start or the next rest stop, whichever you need.

Super Sports in Sylacauga

COGS meeting

There is a COGS meeting scheduled for Tuesday April 6th at Tim and Bev's house, 641 Mountainview Lake Road for 7pm. All routes return to the starting point at the mall where you
can enjoy a postride Chick-Fil-A sandwich (included in registration
fee).
Last sweep of the course is at 5:00.

For More Information
Coosa Valley Cycling Association: net www.cvca.org
Shirley Raley: sraley5@comcast.net
Chris McCormick: cycling50@aol.com
Ordinary Bicycles: 706-234-2453
Cycle Therapy: 706-235-4866 info@cycletherapy.us
=============

Marble City Centuries

Things are going along for the event. Right now I have a lot of folks willing to pitch in. I have a few things left to do but I have requested the ice cream and have t-shirts ordered. The ride is posted on major sites and I have emailed all the clubs round and about. Civitans has got the insurance for the event. Over the next week I'll get the forms printed for registering the day of the event. I'll get down to Fayetteville Water to get permission to put the rest stop on McGowan's Ferry. They always say yes. And I'll see the folks at Big Daddy's Chevron. We have permission to use the site in Weogufka for a rest stop. The Active site is up and running for online registration. The forms for pre-registration are getting a lot of views online. If anyone already has a gift certificate either in hand or promised by any of the local restaurants, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll ask for a pre-event get together a week or so before the event. Until then, stay in touch.
Tim
PS. We will again have the complimentary Animal Medical Center rooftop dinner for Cheaha riders and family/friends on Friday evening. Saturday will again feature the Noble Street Festival--a downtown Anniston family festival that attracts more than 5,000 attendees with great food in the Red Diamond Restaurant Tour, multiple activities for children of all ages in the McWane KidZone, the Mellow Mushroom Mad Dash running race, and the Bike pARTs sculpture competition. Add live music and the nationally recognized and action packed Sunny King Criterium pro and amateur bike races on downtown streets and you have a festival not to be missed. So Saturday morning, everybody interested meet me at Vicious Cycle for a road ride leaving around 8:30am for about a 2 hour ride. I propose to ride up toward Sycamore toward Alpine and back. We can do an out and back type ride so those needing to shorten the length can turn back as they need to.
Anyone wanting to lead a ride each Saturday, please forward details to me or Johnny and we'll forward to the membership. Let me know if anyone does a regular ride and would welcome others and I'll post those also.
Billy is planning a night ride on the trail coming up soon. In the past few days they've been patching it with gravel and tar (shake and bake). It's like riding down a gravel road. They've done some patching like this in the past and eventually those spots smooth out. And did I mention getting showered by gravel when a car passes?

Update 8/7/2009: I rode Oden's Mill this morning and the gravel is mostly swept off the roadway. The routes wind through back roads of
beautiful rolling hills and pastures to some of the most stunning
scenery this area has to offer. Cyclists from around the Southeast
have commented on the beautiful scenery, helpful staff and great
support!

The ride consists of 30, 45, 62 and 100* mile options, all on scenic
rural roads with very little traffic. The 30 and 45-mile routes are
mostly flat to gently rolling, with one moderate climb.

The Century route takes both the 62 & 100-milers to Villanow at about
mile 30, where the century riders will do a loop that returns them to
Villanow. The route contains a couple challenging hills, but no
mountains.

All options return to the starting point at the Mount Berry Square
Mall and are fully sagged. Kathy O. They headed down Alabama Av., then took a right on co.25 and headed toward Teksid (Nemak) and I met them there from my house. We headed toward Hwy280, took a right onto Fulton Gap Rd. co. 113 and passed my road, kept going, over railroad tracks and took a left onto Brown Rd. We went to the stop sign, checked for cars, took a left and a right at the bottom of the hill onto Limbaugh Rd. and went to the end, taking a right at stop onto Pecan Rd. Stop at stop sign, took left onto Coleman Bridge Rd. and went to Hwy 76 and took a right to Oakdale Rd. Stopped here briefly and then went straight, until we came to a left (?) which goes to Riser's Mill Rd. We took the left choosing to go up the hill, then right onto Riser's Mill, stopped and crossed Oakdale and head straight. At the church we take a right, cross bridge, then left onto the racetrack road, walk bikes across bridge and continue on to Odena Church. Kathy and Kathy headed back to Spring Valley Road (big hill) and Twin street, onto their respective destinations. It was 25 miles for me, as I headed back by Teksid (Nemak) and on to co. 25, Fulton Gap right and home on Saturday Lane. (did take in the big hill on Fulton Gap Circle). They road about 30-33miles. It was a great ride. I was on my road at 8:40a.m.
FootNote: The Twin Street Hill is being paved (Spring Valley Rd.) and so give it a few days
before riding it. The fellows were out with the truck and said that is what they
                are doing.

Next ride: Wed. from Billy's @ 5:30 ?
Friday: We - whoever is joining for an early morning ride @ 6:30 from Oak Grove. We plan to go across 280, go around the airport, take a right at the end and the next right (the old Fayetteville Rd.) and go to the end, take a right go to Trader's Helper, take on the Hill, then circle around the lake, to Seven Sweet Gums, go left back to Chevron and then back to Oden's Mill road, cross, depending on energy level, take up the hill near the Community center or not, then head back.
Leaving early due to the heat. Some of us overheated women need the coolness of the morning!
Saturday: 6:30 from Vicious Cycle - Bull Gap?? slow as to check over road, etc.

Sarah Saturday

Talladega Springs

Paul, Cheryl, Bev, and I rode to Talladega Springs this morning. We rode to the end at Hwy 280, crossed onto Flag Pole Mtn. Rd., crossed at intersection Co.45 went straight, left onto Meadow Lane Circle, left at stop sign onto Co. 45 to the end at the Childersburg BP station on the right, cut thru, and crossed 280 getting into turn lane for CACC, crossing Hwy 280 onto Fay S.Perry Dr., CACC on left, continuing straight as it turns into Bon Air Rd. At intersection of Limbaugh Rd. continue straight veer at end to left on Coleman Bridge Rd. then at stop take a right onto Pine Grove Rd. I take a right at Co. road 113 next to Pine Grove Baptist Church to take me home to Saturday Lane. The other two go straight to stop, take a left onto Odena Road (co.24) and right onto Spring Valley (up the HILL, and down, left and onto Twin Street, and both head to their respective dwellings.
This ride was to accommodate me, as I was car-less, and they were willing to ride "the road that must not be ridden" although they were coming from the correct direction for that time of day. It is going the opposite way on Co.25 (Old Syl. Hwy) to Alabama Ave. that is really treacherous as no car can see you around the mountain. Any ways. I did about 16 miles and the other two..add about 20 and 18 to their ride for anywhere from 30-32 or more miles.
It's a good ride for recovery, rolling hills, nothing too steep except for what we refer to as Twin St. hill. The word is out, I don't like going that direction on Pine Grove from Coleman Bridge Rd. - up hill, but it wasn't too bad and we had No Dog Chase on this route.
Bulletin just in: On Twin Street Hill (Spring Valley) going down, encountered phone truck veering into curve as cyclist was taking curve ...turned out fine, but do beware of vehicles bigger than you taking over your side of the road. The curve is a hard one at the end of a speeding descent! And road report: Some entity (most likely county road work) has patched this road in a most undesirable fashion leaving hard ripples of tar where you are cycling. BEWARE as they can knock you for a loop!
Reporting for this ride.
Sarah S.

&amp;lt;a href="http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/al/sylacauga/63801396"&amp;gt;07/18/2008 Route&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;a href="http://www.mapmyride.com/find-ride/united-states/al/sylacauga"&amp;gt;Find more Bike Rides in Sylacauga, Alabama&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;

Wednesday ride...

Johnny reports they had a good turn out for the ride this week. We crossed Hwy 280 at the Chevron station. Then left onto Coaling Road. We took a right at the Y and continued on to the stop sign. Then we took a left at the bottom of the hill (you'd go right to go to Weogufka Family Worship Center) and a quick right. We came to a stop sign with Stewarville -fire dept. and then school on our right. We took a left (wonderful new asphalt which our bikes loved). Went to the Chevron? station on this side of Hwy 21. We stopped to rest/refresh as we had gone about 15-16 miles. It was 8a.m. and we headed back reversing the way we came. I was back at Billy's shortly after 9a.m. and Kathy rode home. It was a good ride of about 31 miles altogether. I love coming back the Coaling Rd. because it is a well-deserved downhill ride.
Sarah S.

Bump and Grind Photos

Photos: Travis(left), Billy(middle, right)

Travis Sherman and Jackson Hagan placed 3rd in their respective classes at Bump and Grind.

Another bridge in place...

This morning Paul, Cheryl and I put a bridge on the first part of that new section by the creek. That drainage creek has a lot of runoff that keeps the bottom soft so this bridge should protect it and make crossing a little easier. That leaves just one more wet crossing I want to get done and then I will focus on getting the last to connector trails open. After we got the bridge in, we did a loop ride up the back of Bee Gum road, over to the Pine Cone trail and back down Black road to the creek. It is amazing how quickly growth takes over the trails. And we found a few more trees down blocking the way. The best tool for keeping these routes open is having riders on them. Maybe with all these sections connected we can get more riders and keep the growth beat back. Bye the way, we saw a Rattlesnake that was crushed on the roadway. Don't forget to look where you're putting your feet when you are in the woods.

Bridges

Today my Grandson David and I installed a couple of "bridges" on the Lep's portion of the trail. There where you turn left onto the new section tended to be water-logged and so did the little uphill at the end of the old logging road. I put a short section on each one to armor the approach to them. We had planned to also install a bridge in the first section down by the creek but a tree had fallen and blocked the road. We didn't have enough time to double back and drive around the other side. By the time we ferried the lumber down to those other sites, we were pretty beat. Bear in mind, David is 4 years old. So if you haven't tried those new trail options yet, we need you out there riding them to keep them clear of new growth. And if you ride it and appreciate the improvements, drop me an email and I'll pass the word along to David. They now project not being able to start on our trail until September. According to Billy, the team encountered a problem when one of the main trail builders became ill and had to be hospitalized. This threw the current projects behind. To make matters worse, some of the projects can only be completed in a narrow window of opportunity before winter makes work impossible. These projects became a priority ahead of ours since our mild winters won't preclude working. So that's how we got moved to September. Everyone from our local Forest Service to the Mayor have weighed in on getting the project sooner but it just isn't happening.

The good news remains the fact the trail WILL happen. Meanwhile we are riding old logging roads and finding new ones in an effort to get a mountain bike network open.

Trail building...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_ja_ch4BHCkM/SAVa5C9da4I/AAAAAAAAAO4/ymUpNbbtwuw/s400/2372874562_eb1517e6b4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189654081708059522" />
A few more months till we have the Lake Howard trail. They are hoping they can connect many of them and produce a loop of single track that will be accessible from the new Lake Trail and add miles to our trail rides. Trails Unlimited was stalled on bridge work in Louisiana and went on to Texas. We thought they would come to Alabama next. But Louisiana got things straightened out so they are working there. We won't see them till April. The good news is the fact they will be coming. Also, they worked out a change in the layout that will avoid having to build a 22 foot bridge that was expected to cost several thousand dollars.

We discussed progress on the Metric Century. It looks like we've got lots of nice premiums to give away that day. Most of our logistic work is in place and we are getting volunteers for that day. All we need now is lots of riders.

A committee was appointed to seek new officers for the coming year. Anyone who would like to nominate someone contact Billy Beane. I recommend everyone who can to take a turn as an officer. It is a necessary and important part of participation. Due to come obstacles Trails Unlimited is finding in Mississippi, they may be here the first of February to begin the trail. We discussed the responsibilities the club would assume in maintaining the trail. Some of us will have to attend Forest Service classes so that our work groups comply with FS guidelines. Once Trails Unlimited gets started, we will need to be prepared to get in to get the handwork portion done. We were told there is one bridge that may have to be put in. This could run thousands of dollars. There are grants available which could help with these costs. Also, we might find a corporate sponsor willing to help especially once we get a blueprint for the bridge and get started building the trail.

There continues to be a lot of excitement about the trail. I'm sure the club will come together on this project.

Hope, loss and bicycles in Zambia...

For whatever reason, it is considered improper for journalists to cry. He told me the plan is to get the trail cut early December. He showed me a list of responsibilities that will be split between the City and the Club. Here is an abbreviated list of the Club's responsibilites:
1. Maintain drainage (ditches)
2. Maintain culverts and bridges.
3. Obliteration of unauthorized trails.
4. Monitoring the trail for needs, safety, impact to resources
5. Re-vegetation or seeding.
The company they will be using did a great job on the lower part of the Pinhoti a couple of years ago. Still it will leave a lot of debris that will have to be cleared and trees and bushes will need to be trimmed back to open up the trail. In some places the bench for the trail can't be cut with the dozer so we will have to get in there and scratch it out with rakes and shovels. But once the trail is in place, these other things won't take up a lot of our time. The main thing that will keep the trail up is simply "riding it".
It looks like we'll end up with something to be proud of.
Tim

Chief Ladiga Trail ready...

It is time for that trip on the Chief Ladiga Trail all the way to Atlanta...

No sweat bicycle tours....

I ran across a link to these tours in an article. The course was a total of 3550 km in length (2206 miles), ridden over 20 days for a average of 177 km (110 miles) per day.

Alberto Contador won the 2007 Tour by riding the course in 91 hours, 0 minutes, and 26 seconds. That results in an average speed of 39.01 kph or 24.24 mph.

Wim Vansevenant rode the exact same distance on the course, and finished as Lanterne Rouge - the last-placed rider to finish the Tour. He just covered the same distance slightly slower - finishing in 94 hours, 53 minutes, and 20 seconds. That's an average speed of 37.41 kph, or 23.25 mph.

ONLY 1 MILE PER HOUR DIFFERENCE!

How about that guys?

Tim

Chief Ladiga/Silver Comet

http://www.cleburnenews.com/news/2007/cn-local-0614-0-7f14l0113.htm
When this thing gets finished, we need to get up an overnight ride from Jacksonville to Georgia and back.

this is one of the finest "what you can do" articles to address our global-warming lifestyle!

From the article:
...Following the shocking revelation that heat generated by vigorous exercise is a major contributor to global warming, we are all having to reassess our own activities. It comes as a major surprise to many of us that storing energy in human fat is actually a valuable way of reducing our impact on the environment. Government may be introducing plans to extract this fat by large-scale liposuction programmes and storing it underground, but we all have a responsibility to reduce our participation in ecologically hazardous physical activity.
Looking at my own lifestyle, it was easy to identify my cycling habit as a major problem. I'm only too aware of the amount of heat that cycling can generate but cutting down was not going to be easy, so six months ago I turned for help to my friend Jeremy. He has not cycled since he was a child and is a respectable three stone (1 stone = 14 lbs) heavier than me. He now runs a consultancy helping people like me to face up to and overcome our environmental deficit...
The above is an excerpt from Bob Williams' "How to Give Up Cycling"
I hoped somebody might get a laugh from this....

Rider List for Big Dirt Road Ride

Tim Presley
Paul Barnett
Denis Nicholson
Perry Clark

We got it done. My original plan was to take the bikes up to highway 77 where Skyway Motorway crosses and ride back over Horn Tower to Bull Gap and home from there. The only problem I saw was having a lot of riders wanting to come and having to ferry all those bikes up to the start.
So I've come up with a plan B. I want to do a ride starting from the Bike Shop going out by Lake Howard and on through all the little trails and routes we normally do. The difference will be using the Forest Service Roads to connect them and add mileage. I propose riding out and looping Rocky Mount, back across 148 up White Gap, down the ridge of the mountain, and back in via the Big John-Trammell Road loop.
Let's plan on leaving that morning by 8am. If you are coming, let me know. I want to put a cache of water at a couple of spots in an ice-chest. The route I've picked will include some serious climbs. I've been testing out most of the sections and have a couple to check before then. I couldn't tell you exactly how many miles this may be but my best guess is 35.
Thanks,
Tim
PS: Johnny- Please forward this message on your mail list, I don't have all the addresses in my list. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with
that?" And Man said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it,
add some sprinkles." And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled.

And God created the healthful yogurt that Woman might keep
the figure that Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from
the wheat, and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from
size 6 to size 14.

So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan
presented Thousand-Island Dressing, buttery croutons and garlic toast on the
side. And Man gained
more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof.

God then created a light, fluffy white cake, named it
"Angel Food Cake," and said, "It is good." Satan then created chocolate
cake and named it "Devil's Food."

God then brought forth running shoes so that His children
might lose those extra pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control
so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And super size them!" And Satan said, "It is
good." And Man went into cardiac arrest.

God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.

Then Satan created HMOs.

Updating email list...

I am preparing to give an updated email list to the new officers.
